Theme: How Long will you stand between two opinions?

Scripture : I Kings 18:15-40

And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if

the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a

Points To Ponder

If you read the complete passage of scripture, you will see the players in this

competition. There is the prophet Obadiah and the King Ahab and his devilish

wife Jezebel…and there’s Elijah. The people of Israel were serving a god called

Baal, which Ahab and Jezebel mandated that they serve. Elijah had had enough!

He sent Obadiah to King Ahab for a showdown- he threw down the gauntlet! He

said “Let’s do this!” and he challenged the 450 prophets of Baal, in front of Ahab,

Jezebel AND the people of Israel, to a showdown. If the Lord be God or

Baal…follow the one who shows up!

But he said something that is central to this story.

How long will you stand between two opinions?

Today, this is where a lot of Christians are—between the world opinion and God’s

We live in a world today that is so “politically correct” the average Christian is

afraid to speak up and say “That’s not Right!”

We don’t want to “offend” anyone by our “opinions”.

Well, I have always said, I would rather offend you “here than there” and God’s

Word is “not an opinion—it is the Law!”

The “there” being- Hell! When they find themselves there and wondered why their

“Christian” friend didn’t speak up!

And yes—their blood will be on our hands!

Back to the story.

The challenge was: which god can send fire down from heaven and consume the

altar and sacrifice?

The prophets of Baal went first.

They prayed loud and long…nothing happened.

At one point, Elijah mocked them and said “Pray Louder—Baal can’t hear you!”

When it was Elijah’s turn, he prayed a 63 word prayer!

And Fire fell!

It consumes the altar, the sacrifice and licked up the water all around it!

God showed up!

And the people fell on their faces and worshiped the Lord God of Israel.

And those prophets of Baal?

Well, let’s just say that God doesn’t keep the enemy’s minions around!

Where are you?

Stuck between two opinions?

Do you do what’s politically correct and just keep Christ to yourself?

Do you stand up boldly, live your life as an open book of God’s love and

acceptance and…

Declare that He is the Lord God of your life!

No matter what Ahab, Jezebel or Baal and his prophets think.

It’s your choice.

Who do you choose?

Someone may be watching and may need a true Christian friend to show them the

light—before they wind up in the dark!

Let’s Pray Together

Lord God, give me the strength I need to boldly declare you as my Lord and

Savior to all around me: at work, at home, in my neighborhood, with my friends. I

decide this day to choose you! I won’t do the politically correct thing that has me

disappointing you and myself, and eventually, those around me. I am called to be

a light sent into a dark world. I ask your forgiveness for standing on the sidelines

and not stepping up to the plate and saying “I’m proud to be a Christian!”

But I declare this day that you are my God…Lord God of Israel!
